LIMA—Gene Patrick, former chair of the board of trustees for St. Rita’s Medical Center, received Catholic Health Partners’ 2008 Founders’ Award for excellence in governance leadership May 2 at the group’s annual retreat.
The award recognizes a trustee who demonstrates understanding and commitment to Catholic Healthcare Partners’ (CHP) mission and values; brings energy and vision to board deliberations and finds new ways to address the needs of people who are poor and the needs of the communities that CHP serves; models personal and professional integrity; integrates personal expertise in support of CHP’s mission; and effectively connects organizations, people and ideas, reality and hope and resources and needs.
“Gene Patrick is a leader who has been truly generous with his commitment to our mission ... for nearly two decades,” says CHP board chair James C. Patton, who presented the award.
Mr. Patrick, who serves as president of the Lima City Offices of the Huntington Bank and as a regional vice president for Huntington Bank in Columbus, Ohio, was appointed to what is now CHP’s West Central Ohio Health Partners’ board of trustees in 1991. He became board vice chair in 1994 and served as chair from 1999 through 2005. In 2005, he again accepted the role of vice chair, which he held until his term ended in February. In addition to board leadership, Mr. Patrick has served on the board’s executive committee, finance and strategy committee, audit and corporate responsibility committee, nominating committee and the board freedom of choice committee.
At the system level, he has shared his time, energy and expertise on Catholic Healthcare Partners’ finance and strategy committee and, as of this year, on CHP’s investment committee.
According to a statement released by St. Rita’s Medical Center, Mr. Patrick’s leadership skills — especially in finance, management and organization — have been instrumental in promoting growth and expansion at St. Rita’s Medical Center, the region’s hospital in Lima.
“The expansion project, which was crucial to St. Rita’s future and to our capacity to meet the health care needs of Lima residents, would not have been possible without the community’s support, and Gene was instrumental in securing that support,” says Jim Reber, president and chief executive officer of St. Rita’s Medical Center. “He asks the right questions and helps find solutions that benefit everyone. It has been a great privilege to work with someone who possesses such integrity and ability, and we are very grateful for his unwavering dedication in support of our mission.”
