"Ratings are certainly an easy way to evaluate a nursing home, but consumers looking for the right care should look at much more than how many stars a facility gets to determine if it is right for them or their loved ones," Beverley Laubert, state long-term care ombudsman, said in a statement accompanying the survey results. "For the complete picture, you should compare ratings with the opinions of those who receive services, as well as with your own experiences during a personal visit to the home."
The survey, conducted by Ms. Laubert’s office, found the statewide average satisfaction score for facilities was 88.2, with 25 facilities scoring 94.9 or better. Sacred Heart Home’s score was 97.9.
Other Catholic facilities located within the Diocese of Toledo participating in the survey were:
• Providence Care Center, Sandusky (91.3),
• Rosary Care Center, Sylvania (91),
• St. Francis Home, Tiffin (88.6),
• Franciscan Care Center, Sylvania (86.8) and
• St. Francis Health Care Centre, Green Springs (83.7).
The Sarah Jane Living Center in Delphos also ranked in the top 25 in the state, but is not affiliated with the Catholic Church.
Residents and families were asked to rate their facilities on activities, administration, admission, choices, direct care and nursing, laundry, meals and dining, social services, therapy and general satisfaction. Researchers identified two key questions: "Overall, do you like this facility?" and "Would you recommend this facility to a family member or friend?" Sixteen nursing homes scored 100 on both questions, including Sacred Heart Home.
Two other nursing homes in the diocese scored 100 on both of the key questions: Elizabeth Scott Community in Maumee and Ruffing Family Care Center of Bloomville.
The Family Satisfaction Survey was conducted between June and December 2008 by the Scripps Gerontology Center of Miami University, with more than 24,500 family member from 630 facilities participating. The satisfaction ratings and other information about nursing homes in the state are available from Ohio Long-term Care Consumer Guide at www.ltcohio.org.
