Seventh-graders from area elementary schools were invited to join the program via a nomination from the elementary school principal or teachers. Students were selected based on their outstanding academic, spiritual and leadership qualities.

Thirty-nine students from 24 local schools were involved. Toledo schools included Blessed Sacrament, Gesu, Little Flower, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Our Lady of Lourdes, Regina Coeli, Rosary Cathedral, Sacred Heart, St. Clement, St. Joan of Arc, St. John the Baptist, St. Patrick of Heatherdowns, St. Pius X, St. Thomas Aquinas and Washington Local Schools.

Additional schools participating were Rossford All Saints; Assumption Holy Trinity; Whitehouse Lial; Walbridge St. Jerome; Erie, Mich., St. Joseph, Maumee St. Joseph; Sylvania St. Joseph; Swanton St. Richard; and Sylvania Franciscan Academy.

Larry Nester, social studies instructor, taught the students about leadership and how leaders have to step outside of the normal box. Connie Peebles, religion teacher, instructed students on leadership in the Catholic Church. Art teacher Tim Wilson had the students create pop art collages demonstrating how some leaders have to be creative thinkers. The students also attended a math lesson on leadership and relationships with math instructor Bonnie Jean Chudzinski.

The Young Irish Scholars “graduated” and received a certificate and a T-shirt.

Nearly 250 students have participated in the Young Irish Scholars program at Central Catholic since its first class in the fall of 2005.
