TOLEDO—Central Catholic High School senior Chloe Rose recently won a singing contest at Youmacon 2009, an anime convention held in Dearborn, Mich.

Anime involves Japanese animation and culture, and the convention featured anime voice actors, music and a variety of contests.

Chloe entered the “Youma Idol” contest, which required her to record and submit two songs in Japanese. She was among the top 10 finalists who performed a song live at the convention, and then she was voted the overall winner of the contest.

Chloe used the new media production facility at CCHS to record her songs for submission. The facility features a professionally-designed, full multi-track recording studio. She recorded a love song in Japanese despite the fact that she does not speak the language. She said she found a translation online and was able to match the melody and memorize the words. She sings the song a cappella and says the experience of recording it in the new studio was awesome.

Chloe said she originally wanted to enter a costume contest at the convention where she could dress up as her favorite anime character, and she wanted to perform a singing skit. But since the costume contest did not allow any singing, she entered the idol contest.

Chloe is a member of the Anime Club at CCHS. Club members gather regularly to draw, watch and discuss Japanese animation and learn about Japanese culture.
