TOLEDO—Seniors Morgan Rhodes and Emerald Woodberry of Toledo Central Catholic High School have been named National Achievement Scholar semifinalists.
The National Achievement Scholarship program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding black American high school students. Black students may enter both the National Achievement Program and the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and meeting other published requirements for participation.
Central Catholic seniors Aaron DeLong and Chris Valentic have been named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists. They are among only 16,000 nationwide to achieve this distinction out of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition.
Representing less than 1 percent of each state’s high school seniors, semifinalists are the highest scoring program entrants in each state, and they are the only participants who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for the 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $35 million, that will be offered next spring.
About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win Merit Scholarship awards and be honored as Merit Scholar designees.
In addition, Central Catholic seniors Steven Billmaier, Samantha Filar, Samantha Lortz and Amanda Ranazzi have been named Commended Students in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2009 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
