TOLEDO—Central Catholic High School plans to welcome Coach Tony Dungy, author of the New York Times best seller “Quiet Strength,” as the featured speaker in the CCHS Reads program this school year.
Mr. Dungy is to address the student body March 9, 2010, after it has read his novel “Uncommon, Finding Your Path to Significance.”
The CCHS Reads program began during the 2006-07 school year to encourage students to read for fun. In the program, teachers and students read the same book and then study it as it is integrated into classroom lessons. CCHS Reads is designed to promote lifelong reading by encouraging students to read and discuss an author’s work before and after the author visits the school for an all-school assembly.
Mr. Dungy is a former professional football player and NFL coach. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. He was head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001 and the Indianapolis Colts from 2002 to 2008. He became the first African-American head coach to win the Super Bowl when the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in 2007. He retired from coaching in January of 2009.
In his book “Uncommon,” Mr. Dungy reveals lessons on achieving significance, particularly focusing on what it means to be a man of significance in a culture that is offering young men few positive role models.
