TOLEDO—The first recipient of the Mercy College Irma Rutkowski Scholarship is Diane Weiland-Geisbuhler, who began her studies at Mercy in health care administration in January.
Ms. Weiland-Geisbuhler was on hand at the Mercy College Auxiliary Christmas luncheon when John F. Hayward, president of Mercy College, announced the establishment of the Irma Rutkowski Scholarship Fund.
Daniel and Mary Jo Hanson donated funds to establish this scholarship honoring Irma Rutkowski, who as president led the Mercy Hospital Guild through the transition to become the Mercy College Auxiliary. The auxiliary is now a thriving organization that enhances the mission of Mercy College through fundraising activities and volunteer services to support the college.
Additionally, Dr. Hanson has established a charitable remainder trust to endow continuing support for this fund in the amount of $300,000.
Ms. Rutkowski, a graduate of the University of Toledo, began her career at Mercy Hospital in 1949 as a registered medical technologist. She later earned registry in blood banking and became technical director of the blood bank. She assumed directorship of the School of Medical Technology in 1980 and retired in 1990.
President Hayward received several other donations during the luncheon. Mrs. Gwenyth Mickus, chairperson for the allocation committee of the St. Vincent Mercy Auxiliary, presented two checks totaling $19,650. Two thousand dollars is allocated for scholarships and the remainder is to be used to purchase furnishings for the newly renovated continuing professional education area at the college.
