TOLEDO—John F. Hayward, president of Mercy College of Northwest Ohio, announced the appointment of Anne Loochtan as vice president of academic affairs of Mercy College. Dr. Loochtan is to begin July 6.

“We are delighted that a person of Dr. Loochtan’s reputation and experience is joining the Mercy College community,” Mr. Hayward said. “Her broad experience in health education programs complements our focus on expanding educational opportunities and our growing enrollment.”

In her new role, Dr. Loochtan is to be responsible for providing leadership and direction at Mercy College in its mission of health care education.  She is to work closely with the administration and faculty exploring new degree programs and expanding the college’s distance learning program.  She succeeds Martha K. Shouldis who resigned in August 2008 to become president of St. Vincent College in Connecticut.

“I look forward to working with the faculty and students of Mercy College. The clinical experiences available to Mercy students through the college’s affiliation with Mercy Health Partners are unmatched,” says Dr. Loochtan.

Dr. Loochtan says she is especially interested in creating and facilitating short-term programs for working adults, helping them prepare for new careers.

“Mercy College is well-poised to be able to offer both certificate programs and bachelor’s completion programs for a non-traditional audience. I am hoping to help increase distance learning or online programming to accommodate the hectic schedules of these new students,” she says.

Dr. Loochtan is a career-long advocate for effective health care education in her various roles as clinical educator, distance learning consultant and higher education administrator. She has served as a clinical educator and administrator at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Mount Carmel Medical Center, Sinclair Community College, Pueblo (Colorado) Community College and The Ohio State University’s School of Allied Medical Professions. She is a member of the American Association of Respiratory Care, the United States Distance Learning Association and was a commissioner for the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Dr. Loochtan is also president of the National Network of Health-Career Programs in Two-Year Colleges, and since 2006, has served on the Pandemic Influenza Advisory Committee of the Hamilton County District Health Department. She has experience as a presenter at professional conferences.

Dr. Loochtan holds a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy degree from the Ohio State University, a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling degree from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education: Instructional Design and Online Learning from Capella University.

Dr. Loochtan is the mother of two adult sons, both medical students, one at the University of Toledo and the other who is to attend Ohio University. Dr. Loochtan’s personal interests include spending time with family and friends, walking, Irish fiddle music and amateur jewelry-making.
