New basketball coach named at Toledo Central Catholic High School |

TOLEDO—Former Owens Community College basketball coach Jim Welling has been named the new Fighting Irish boys’ varsity basketball coach.
Mr. Welling has a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Toledo and comes to Toledo Central Catholic with a long history of coaching that includes a very successful program at Owens Community College from 1984 to 2006. Under his leadership, the Owens Express won National Junior College Athletic Association Division II titles in 1992 and 1993, and he was twice named the NJCAA Division II Coach of the Year.
His career record at Owens is 550-127. Mr. Welling retired as the Owens Community College basketball coach after the 2005-2006 season. Most recently, he served as the boys’ varsity basketball coach at Lake High School.
“We are extremely enthusiastic that Jim has accepted this position at Central Catholic,” says Father Dennis Hartigan, president of the school. “I am confident that Jim will continue to lead our basketball program to the highest level possible."
Mr. Welling says, “I am honored to be given this opportunity to coach for the Fighting Irish. I look forward to working with the team as well as the faculty and staff at Central Catholic High School."
