Toledo Central Catholic gradates honored for achievements |

TOLEDO—Individual academic and leadership awards were presented to members of the Toledo Central Catholic High School (CCHS) Class of 2009 at an honors assembly May 18.
The Class of 2009 valedictorian is Samantha Lortz, the salutatorian is Amanda Ranazzi and the Heritage Speaker is Aaron DeLong. Steve Billmaier and Kristen Murnen are the recipients of the Bishop’s Cross.
Frederick Brown and Anne McCarthy received the Rev. James E. Steinle Senior Leadership Award, given in honor of a former principal at Central Catholic, to recognize two seniors who have demonstrated strong qualities of leadership and service without receiving formal recognition.
Three members of the class were recognized for their hours of community service during their four years at CCHS. Ben Szymanski served 347 hours, Courtney Kornowa served 370 hours, and Lauren Eagle donated 935 hours to community service.
Several scholar-athlete awards carry academic requirements at Central Catholic. The Margaret Mary Volz Scholar Athlete Award and the Tom McHugh Award are presented to one female and one male student who have lettered in at least two sports during their senior year, have maintained at least a 2.0 grade point average after seven semesters, and are the top-ranking student athletes. These awards were presented to Ashley Sujkowski and Jordan Duckett.
The OHSAA Scholar Athlete Awards are given to the senior male and the senior female with the highest grade point average who have received a minimum of four varsity letters in all sports combined. This year’s recipients are MacKenzie Jennings and Anne McCarthy.
The Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Awards were presented to Jeffery Balogh and Kaila Blanchard.
The CCHS Class of 2009 earned more than $16.5 million in college scholarships and its graduates have been accepted at 58 different colleges and universities, including the University of Notre Dame, Case Western, Northwestern, The Ohio State University, Clemson, United States Naval Academy, University of Michigan, Michigan State, University of North Carolina, Purdue, Fordham, Xavier University, University of Iowa, Vanderbilt and Loyola University.
