The review team urged Gov. Strickland to temporarily suspend executions to permit a “thorough review” of the Ohio death penalty. Two days after the ABA study was released, Ohio activists attended a statewide day of action to end executions Sept. 26 in Columbus. “There’s a growing sense of frustration with the fact that we kill people to show them killing is wrong,” says Sylvania Franciscan Sister Sharon Havelak, who attended with a group of other sisters from her community. She calls the day of action a “wonderful tool for raising awareness for some of the issues around the death penalty.” Continuing discussion and education on the issue is key to creating a groundswell of public outcry against the death penalty, according to Mr. Tobin. “We certainly need to continue to call the Catholic faithful to a dialogue and deeper understanding of this issue, because it’s a hard issue,” he adds.
