Six artists from Defiance Catholic School had their artwork included in a recent gallery exhibit at Defiance College, and eight Toledo Central Catholic High School art students have pieces soon to be on display at the University of Toledo.

Among the artists featured at Defiance College Women’s Commission Gallery were Defiance Catholic School art teacher Jen (Bok) Boyds and her students Natalie Castillo, Mackensie Guilford, James Howard, Kaitlyn Koch and Brenna Rohn.

The exhibit, which showcased pieces by local art education alumni and their students, included a wide range of media including photography, paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculpture.

Artwork from the Central Catholic students is part of the Focus 2008 art show at the University of Toledo’s Center for the Visual Arts Gallery, which runs from Oct. 28 through Nov. 16 and features more than 250 works from 27 schools. The students who have work in the exhibit are Alanna Crumley, Scott Deca, Erin Iiams, Madeline Jackson, Claire McDonald, George Pipoly, Renee Sarra and Meg Schneider.

The art show is an exhibition of the best high school artwork from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan from last school year; the judging for the show took place in May.

Students submitted approximately 1,600 pieces of work in areas including painting, drawing, printmaking, two-dimensional design, sculpture, ceramics, graphics, metalsmithing, mixed media, textiles and photography.

Original entries from students in grades nine through 12 were judged on skill, craftsmanship and creative interpretation by a jury panel consisting of area artists, art educators and gallery directors.
