TOLEDO—After serving for six years on the United States Bishops’ Subcommittee on the Catechism, Toledo Bishop Leonard P. Blair has been named its chairman.

The principal activity of this permanent subcommittee of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis is to review manuscripts of catechetical texts to ensure that they are in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

"The goal is the publication of religious education materials for use in schools and religious education programs that not only accurately reflect the catechism, but also are complete, that is, they cover the catechism adequately in an age-appropriate way," Bishop Blair says.

Publishers, he adds, are excellent to work with, and are willing to make modifications when requested because both the publishers and the subcommittee want the best materials for students.

The subcommittee meets four times a year to review texts, and is assisted in its work by the staff of the Evangelization and Catechesis Department of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB) in Washington, D.C. Typically, two to four texts are reviewed by the subcommittee at one of its quarterly meetings, Bishop Blair says.

The subcommittee chairman leads the meeting discussions, works with the staff in Washington, D.C., and occasionally provides reports during the general meetings of the United States bishops.

A listing of texts that bear a "declaration of conformity" with the catechism can be found on the USCCB Web site at www.usccb.org.
