The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC), a campaign designed to strengthen families and faith locally and around the world, is asking Catholics in our diocese to support the church’s efforts to remain a strong voice in the media.

No longer part of the Annual Catholic Appeal, our diocese will ask parishioners for their gifts to this campaign in parishes May 17 and 18.

According to Sally Oberski, director of communications, half of the money collected for this campaign stays in the diocese, with the other half going to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

“With the money that stays in our diocese, we will continue to bring the news of our diocese to people, as well as fund important projects that are of interest to people of all ages. This collection is currently funding ‘A Journey Toward Understanding,’ a documentary film about our ecumenical pilgrimage to Germany and Italy in 2007. This film will be a learning tool for our schools as well as an enjoyable film about Lutherans and Catholics traveling together.”

Ms. Oberski adds that the collection helps fund important aspects of the communications office.

“This past year the Catholic Chronicle staff was able to purchase new computers and software to replace the outdated models and software that grows obsolete so quickly. It also provided the necessary funds to develop the diocesan Web site, toledodiocese.org, and the newspaper’s new Web site, catholicchronicle.org.”

The USCCB uses funds from this collection to produce Daily Reflections, Daily Mass Readings, Catholic Radio Weekly, American Catholic Radio, and movie reviews, all accessible from the Toledo diocesan Web site. The conference also produced For Your Marriage, an interactive, Web-based resource for married couples, and inspirational Catholic programming that is provided to ABC, NBC affiliates and cable television outlets.

Matching funds to two Catholic radio efforts in our diocese, St. Gabriel Radio in the southeastern part of diocese, and Annunciation Radio, a start-up effort in the metropolitan Toledo area were also made possible through the CCC.

Opportunities for high school and college student interns are made possible through this collection, providing practical and useful journalism experience.
