Catholic peace groups among sponsors of Iraq invasion fifth anniversary activities

TOLEDO—From March 18 through March 22, co-sponsors including Tiffin Pax Christi, Pax Christi of Toledo Corpus Christi University Parish, Sylvania Sisters of St. Francis and Pax Christi Wood County are staging “Arlington Midwest: the Human Cost of War” at the Lucas County Courthouse.

Five thousand tombstones create this display, representing U.S. service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and those returning home and committing suicide. Also included are the names of 3,000 Iraqis out of more than a million killed.

Activities for the week include:

March 18, setting up of the tombstones;

March 19, opening ceremony and reading of the names of the fallen;

March 20, documentary film, “Sir! No Sir!,” a film on the underground GI movement against the war in Vietnam;

March 22, peace activists rally at Promenade Park and march to the Lucas County Courthouse for a rally and closing ceremony for Arlington Midwest tombstone display. Wes Liggett, a USMC veteran deployed to Iraq three times, is the featured speaker.
