Several organizations throughout the Diocese of Toledo helped make the Christmas season brighter for others. Here is a sampling of some of the projects and programs organized by people at Catholic institutions throughout northwest Ohio.
Toledo St. Ursula Academy students and guests accessorized their outfits for the Christmas Dance a bit differently this year. Instead of the usual corsage or boutonniere, all students attending the dance Dec. 1 were challenged by the student council to bring a toy to donate to Toys for Tots. Eight large boxes were overflowing with donations.
Forty-two little ones attended Toledo Notre Dame Academy’s Cookies and Milk with Santa Dec. 2. Notre Dame Academy alumnae and families were kept very busy decorating cookies, coloring, playing pin the nose on the snowman and visiting with Santa. Students monitored the many different Christmas stations making sure all of the little ones stayed on Santa’s “Nice List.”
Toledo St. Pius X School displayed its first “Living Nativity” for the public Dec. 16. The outdoor nativity was viewed by families driving their cars across the school campus. Fourth- through sixth-grade students were “living” statues for the evening. The event was billed as a way to “put a little Christ in your Christmas.”
A first-grade class from Green Springs Elementary performed a Christmas program for the patients and residents of St. Francis Health Care Centre Dec. 18.
Students from Mansfield St. Mary High School CCD classes got into the Christmas spirit of giving by participating in Operation Christmas Child, a Samaritan’s Purse Project. The teens brought in school supplies, toiletries, socks, toys and candy and then used the supplies to create boxes for needy children. The students prayed for the recipients of the boxes before sending them off.
The third-grade students at Mansfield St. Mary Elementary School made fleece blankets for the residents of Oak Grove Manor Nursing Home. The students earned money for the project by holding a bake sale.
