GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Two diocesan high schools are among the best 50 Catholic secondary schools in the United States, according to the Acton Institute, which announced its fourth annual Catholic High School Honor Roll.

Oregon Cardinal Stritch and Tiffin Calvert High School are both on the honor roll for the second time and the only two named among the top 50 in the state of Ohio.

In addition to being named in the top 50, they are both also named as leaders in the Catholic identity portion of the honor roll. Toledo St. John’s Jesuit High School was named a category leader in academics.

This year marks the second consecutive year Cardinal Stritch was named among the top 50, while Calvert had the same distinction in 2004. Calvert was a Catholic identity category leader in 2006.

“Being selected to the top 50 last year was quite an honor; however, our selection this year is even more meaningful since the number of schools applying to the honor roll increases every year, making the competition even more intense,” said Cardinal Stritch principal Timothy Mahoney in a press release. “This year only two schools in the state of Ohio were selected … I think this says quite a bit about the success and quality of education of the small, Catholic high school in the Diocese of Toledo.”

The purpose of the Catholic High School Honor Roll is to recognize and encourage excellence in Catholic secondary education. It is a resource for parents and educators that honors those schools that excel in three categories: academic excellence, Catholic identity and civic education.
