Teachers and staff members at two Catholic schools in the diocese recently took time to help those in need in their communities.
Teachers and staff from Oregon Cardinal Stritch High School practiced what they teach — stewardship — by working at Helping Hands of St. Louis and the Cherry Street Mission during their annual retreat Oct. 31.

Rather than spending the day listening to a motivational speaker, they served meals, sorted food donations and cleaned at both outreach centers.
“We teach our students that we are stewards, rather than owners, of the gifts we receive from God,” says Father David Reinhart, president of Kateri School System. “We are accountable to God as to how we use those gifts.
“Stewardship is a way of life that we talk about, encourage and live,” he says. “On a daily basis, we try to focus on the three “Gs” of stewardship — All is God’s, Gratitude and Generosity. The faculty and staff at Cardinal Stritch High School chose to spend their retreat helping others as a way to lead by example.”
Cardinal Stritch is the first area Catholic high school to launch a stewardship initiative. The program, called “Live It,” began in 2006.
In Findlay, staff members from St. Michael School volunteered time and money Nov. 13 to prepare and serve dinner at the City Mission, a local homeless shelter. Everyone pitched in to prepare the meal, which included lasagna, salad, bread and a brownie, and they also donated items needed at the shelter.
Along with preparing the meal, the staff toured City Mission, which includes a dining area, a kitchen, dorms and living areas for residents and a chapel. City Mission houses homeless in the Findlay area and serves meals to residents and others in need. The organization is privately funded.
St. Michael’s staff members were proud to give back to the community and share their blessings with others.
