TOLEDO—Plans are to go on with the St. Thomas Aquinas parish festival this weekend, following a fatal shooting nearby Friday night.

However, youth access to the event will be limited after 8 p.m., says Father John Blaser, pastor at St. Thomas. After 8 p.m., the festival will be limited to people age 18 or older, unless accompanied by a parent.

The shooting, which occurred near the corner of White and Idaho streets, was off of church property, Fr. Blaser says. The incident seems to involved gang activity, he adds, describing the festival as drawing teens from all over the city of Toledo.

Fr. Blaser was outside when he heard the one shot a little after 10 p.m., and he says police responded quickly. The festival was closed at that time to avoid further unrest, he says.

Toledo police officers are always on hand to provide security for the festival, Fr. Blaser says. Any trouble in the past, he adds, has typically been fistfights between adults that are quickly and easily squelched.

The St. Thomas Aquinas parish festival continues this weekend from 3 p.m. to midnight Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.
