TOLEDO—USA Swimming has selected the Greater Toledo Aquatic Club’s (GTAC) Swim School and the Josh Project as national partners with its Make A Splash Program. The swim school is located at St. Francis de Sales High School and is under the direction of St. Francis Head Swimming Coach Keith Kennedy.

GTAC is one of only four programs nationally that have been recognized as Make A Splash liasons.

Swim lesson programs that become national partners of Make A Splash are recognized for serving its goals of water safety education, prevention of drowning (especially among central city youths where the drowning rates are highest) and promotion of diversity in the sport.

GTAC’s Swim School has been in operation since 2001 and annually teaches more than 500 children and adults, including students with physical disabilities. GTAC is the teaching site for the Lucas County and Toledo Public School Special Olympics Swim Program, and provides the swim instruction for the Josh Project, a nationally known initiative begun by Toledoan Wanda Butts, which provides free swim lessons to central city children or any person who cannot afford swim lessons.

The Josh Project has been honored by USA Swimming and other national organizations for its efforts in lowering drowning rates among urban children and increasing awareness of water safety.
