Jesse Manibusan hopes to connect with thousands of young people and adults in the Diocese of Toledo during his visit this month for Catholic Schools Week.

The popular evangelizer, youth minister and pastoral musician from Grapevine, Texas, describes himself as an “undercover catechist” who engages his audiences with humor and fun. He will appear at schools and parishes across the diocese Jan. 28-Feb. 2.

Mr. Manibusan says he has been an “itinerant witness” to God’s presence in the world for about 20 years, traveling to World Youth Days and other events to share his message. He considers himself part of a small but growing number of people working for what Pope John Paul II called the “New Evangelization.”

“The kingdom of God is here. The reign of God is here. And we who are baptized have been called into service of that way of living,” says Mr. Manibusan. “Christ is in our midst, and let’s not miss that.”

He delivers that message in a way that appeals to both young people and adults, taking a playful, humorous approach to establish a rapport with his audiences.

“I speak from Scripture, I speak from church teaching and I speak from my experience,” he says. “If I have any power in my ministry, it might simply be that it’s just straight talk from an insecure but hopeful Catholic man.”

During his visit, Mr. Manibusan will present at Catholic schools, at a retreat for youth ministers, at a gathering of young adults and at four evening parish events open to the public. He calls attendance a matter of “life and faith.”

“I really believe with all my heart that there will be something for everyone who attends,” Mr. Manibusan insists. “I’m always amazed at what the Spirit brings forth when there’s a small openness for God’s grace.”
