TOLEDO—The Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank, which provides turkeys to more than 268 agencies it serves including food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters, has launched Operation Turkey, an effort that asks the community for help in this monumental task.

When Operation Turkey first began in 2003, the response from the public was astounding. It has since become an annual appeal. Food bank officials are hoping 2008 is the most successful year to date in collecting turkeys.

Every year the need for food assistance grows. Through its partner agencies, more than 300,000 people received food assistance in 2007, an increase of more than 97 percent since 2001. The food bank depends on donations from individuals and businesses to continue the fight against hunger in northwest Ohio.

Though the food bank has had many generous donations, additional turkeys are still desperately needed. Donations of turkeys or cash can be made to the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank, in care of Operation Turkey, 24 E. Woodruff Ave., Toledo, OH 43604. For more information call 419-242-5000.
