Sister of Mercy Rita Mary Olszewski died March 21 and was in her 43rd year with the Detroit Province. She was born to Theodore and Helen (Charles) Olszewski on June 5, 1948. She was baptized and educated in her home parish, Temperance St. Anthony and graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Toledo in 1966. She joined the Sisters of Mercy, Province of Detroit Aug. 22, 1966, and made perpetual vows Aug. 20, 1972. Sr. Olszewski earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Mercy College of Detroit and a Master of Arts degree in History from the University of Detroit. For 19 years, she taught in Michigan. She also worked for various peace groups, including Peace Action of Michigan, Children’s Peace School at St. Leo in Detroit, Cranbrook Peace Foundation, the Catholic Caucus of Southeast Michigan, Pax Christi, SANE/FREEZE, Michigan Alliance Against Losing the Safety Net and the Sisters of Mercy Justice Committee. She is survived by her mother, Helen; a sister, Monica (Larry) Kesting; two brothers, Jerry (Laura) and Jim (Cheryl); and several nieces and nephews.
