13 Sylvania Franciscan Sisters celebrate jubilees |

75 years Sister M. Matthias Kolinski, from Minneapolis, professed Aug. 16, 1934. She taught at Toledo St. Hyacinth, Sylvania St. Joseph, Toledo St. Jude and at schools in Michigan, Minnesota and Maryland. She worked in media in Michigan and as a tutor in Minnesota. Now she is in Third Age Ministry at Rosary Care Center.
60 years Sister M. Alonzo Gozdowski, from Toledo Our Lady of Lourdes, professed Aug. 18, 1949. She taught or was principal at schools in Michigan and Ohio and in the Toledo Diocese at Tiffin Calvert High School and Oregon Cardinal Stritch High School, where she also worked in the business office and was administrative assistant secretary. She was financial aid secretary and aide to the president’s secretary at Lourdes College, Sylvania; driver and aide companion at Rosary Care Center, Sylvania; and volunteer services and activity coordinator at Providence Hospital, Sandusky. Now she is in Third Age Ministry at Rosary Care Center.
Sister M. Assumpta Hintz, from Toledo Nativity, professed Aug. 18, 1949. She taught in Michigan, served in administration at hospitals in Nebraska, Michigan and Texas and Providence Hospital, Sandusky; and was bookkeeper, assistant treasurer and insurance and general ledger accountant in the Finance Office of the Sisters of St. Francis. Now she is a resident of Rosary Care Center.
Sister Bernice Pasiowitz, formerly Sister Mary Martin, from Minneapolis, professed Aug. 18, 1949. She taught at Toledo Little Flower, Bowling Green St. Aloysius and in Michigan. She was a principal at Bowling Green St. Aloysius, Toledo Regina Coeli and in Minnesota. She assisted in the consolidation of two schools of which she became principal, Toledo Queen of Peace and another in Steubenbille. She served at retreat centers including Chiara Center in Sylvania and others in Steubenville and Minnesota. Now she ministers as spiritual care chaplain/bereavement counselor at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Bryan, Texas.
Sister M. Michaelinda Szwast, from Hamtramck, Mich., professed Aug. 18, 1949. She taught at Toledo St. Hedwig, Sandusky SS. Peter & Paul, Swanton St. Richard, Bowling Green St. Aloysius, Toledo St. Hyacinth and at schools in Minnesota and Michigan. She assisted in the lab at Lourdes College, Sylvania, and The Catholic Academy in New Mexico. She was a medical records assistant in the Finance Office for the Sisters of St. Francis. For the past 16 years she has ministered in the Tutoring Center for the Sisters of St. Francis and is its director.
Sister M. Norbertine Zacharias, from Hamtramck, professed Aug. 10, 1949. She taught at Toledo Nativity, Toledo Flower, Huron St. Peter, Toledo St. Jude and in Minnesota. She was in hospital administration at Providence Hospital, Sandusky and in Steubenville, Texas and Michigan; pastoral care at Providence Hospital; assistant bursar at Lourdes College, Sylvania, and accounts payable for the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters. Now she is a resident of Maria Hall in Sylvania.
Sister Ruth Marie Kachelek, from Toledo Our Lady of Lourdes, professed Aug. 10, 1949. She taught in Ohio, Michigan and Minnesota. She served as a principal at Toledo Regina Coeli and in Cincinnati. For the Diocese of Toledo she was an education consultant and assistant superintendent of schools. At Lourdes College, Sylvania, she was assistant dean and academic dean of studies. She worked in human development and program management with the Christian Appalachian Project in Kentucky and she served on the leadership team of the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters, first as assistant minister general and then minister general. She has been art curator for her religious community.
50 years Sister M. Francis Jerome Serewa, from Michigan, professed Aug. 10, 1959. She taught at Toledo St. Hyacinth, Toledo Our Lady of Lourdes, Swanton St. Richard, Toledo SS. Peter & Paul, Huron St. Peter and in Minnesota. She worked at the House of Prayer and Chapel, and at Rosary Care Center for the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters. She also served in various capacities at parishes in Michigan and at Providence Hospital, Sandusky. Now she is an assistant for the St. Francis Guild and community driver for the sisters.
Sister M. Gretchen Faerber, from Minnesota, professed Aug. 10, 1959. She taught at Toledo St. Hedwig, Toledo St. Jude, Huron St. Peter, Rossford SS. Cyril & Methodius, Port Clinton Immaculate Conception, Walbridge St. Jerome and at schools in Minnesota. She was principal at Crestline St. Joseph, moderator and director of St. Francis Guild, Sylvania, and then produced the Poverello, Sisters of St. Francis. Now she is director of the Gift Shop for Sylvania Franciscan Sisters.
Sister M. Helen Frances Spears, from Toledo Nativity, professed Aug, 10, 1959. She taught at Toledo St. Jude and at schools in Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio. She was regional coordinator in Norwalk and Ottawa for the Diocesan Religious Education Office, director of Assisi Center for the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters, bookstore manager for Lourdes College, Sylvania, and director of religious education at New Washington St. Bernard. Now she is moderator of St. Francis Guild, director of the spirituality center, coordinator of housing and contact for Maria Hall for the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters.
Sister M. Lois Anne Palkert, from Minnesota, professed Aug. 10, 1959. She taught at Toledo St. Hedwig, Sandusky SS. Peter & Paul School and in Detroit. She was director of novices for the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters; instructor at Lourdes College, Sylvania; associate director of the lay ministry program for the Diocese of Toledo; director of the Life Long Learning Center; education consultant for Lourdes College; and director of faith formation in Minnesota. Now she is director of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care for Trinity Medical Center, Brenham, Texas.
Sister M. Lorena Dulas, from Minnesota, professed Aug. 10, 1959. She taught at Toledo St. Hedwig, Toledo Our Lady of Lourdes, Sylvania St. Francis Education Center, Swanton St. Mary, Galion St. Joseph, Walbridge St. Jerome and other schools in Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio. She ministered at the Umbria Hall Print Shop for the congregation and was receptionist and coordinator of the Vianney Center in Steubenville, hospitality coordinator for Good Counsel Education Center in Minnesota, assistant bookstore manager for Lourdes College and switchboard operator and driver for the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters. Now she works for the motherhouse as assistant to the housing coordinator and in housekeeping for the Franciscan Services Corporation.
Sister Maria Pacelli Spino, from Toledo Little Flower, professed Aug. 10, 1959. She taught at Bowling Green St. Aloysius, Toledo Our Lady of Lourdes, Crestline St. Joseph, Toledo Regina Coeli and other schools in Michigan, Ohio and Minnesota. She then ministered in the community’s finance office as an assistant and currently works with the Lay Employees Retirement Plan for the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters.
