TOLEDO—Thirty new members of the Christ Child Society completed a successful reading program at the Rosary Cathedral campus of Central City Ministry of Toledo Catholic School.
The program, “Read Every Knight” named for the school’s mascot, was a week-long competition among the grades to read the most minutes. Guest readers, a special reading nook and individual incentive prizes enticed the students to read for pleasure.
Close to 30,000 minutes were read by 253 students in the course of the week. The top four classrooms were awarded a pizza party May 12. To encourage continued reading over the summer, Christ Child Society members donated more than 900 new and used books for the students and school library.
Terri Giacci, Pam Mahaney and Connie Rush were chairmen of this project. Guest readers included Jan Scovic; Eric Smola, St. Francis de Sales principal; and Father Charles Singler, rector of Toledo Rosary Cathedral.
The Christ Child Society of Toledo (CCS) has been a voice for needy infants and children in the Toledo community for almost 20 years. This past year the Society’s members contributed more than 11,000 hours of volunteer service to disadvantaged children in the community.
