Five Sisters of the Precious Blood celebrate jubilees |

75 Years Sister Melitta (Norma) Barga entered the Sisters of the Precious Blood Aug. 30, 1934, and made her final profession of vows Aug. 15, 1940. She taught in the Diocese of Toledo and at schools in Cincinnati, California and Colorado. In retirement, she worked as a volunteer teaching GED to low-income area residents. She now lives at the congregation’s motherhouse and retirement community in Dayton.
Sister Dorothy (M. Amadea) Dennis entered the congregation July 30, 1934, and made final profession Aug. 15, 1941. For most of her active ministry she was a homemaker and cook. Among her assignments was serving as homemaker at the bishop’s residence in Toledo, where she worked for the late Bishop George Rehring. Her domestic skills took her to ministry in Indiana, Arizona, California and Colorado. Although she is officially retired, she serves as transportation coordinator for the sisters in Dayton.
60 Years Sister Catherine (M. Lucina) Brickner is a native of Ottoville, where she attended Immaculate Conception. She entered the Sisters of the Precious Blood Aug. 28, 1949, and made her final profession of vows Aug. 15, 1955. She taught in elementary and high schools, including in the Diocese of Toledo. After teaching, she was an activity and program director at several health care, nursing and assisted living centers. She now lives at Emma Hall.
Sister Margery (M. Juleen) Schroeder is from Miller City. She entered the Sisters of the Precious Blood Aug. 14, 1949, and professed final vows Aug. 15, 1955. She taught at Ottawa SS. Peter & Paul and in schools in Arizona, Indiana and Ohio. She then became a licensed practical nurse and gave piano lessons. She now lives in Cincinnati where she is active in a variety of volunteer ministries.
50 Years Sister Mary Lou (Peter Marie) Schmersal grew up in Columbus Grove, where she attended St. Anthony. She entered the Sisters of the Precious Blood Jan. 6, 1959, and made her final vows Aug. 15, 1966. Her varied ministries began with education, then moved to religious education and pastoral ministry. In the Toledo Diocese, she was regional religious education director, based in Defiance. She then became co-director of the diocese’s regional religious education program, based in Toledo. She then became pastoral associate at Toledo Blessed Sacrament. She served there until 1991 when she began congregational service in varied ministries, including retreat ministry and spiritual direction, public relations, computer resource specialist and director of initial formation for the congregation. Currently she is director of public relations for the Maria Stein Center.
