The pregnancy support center recently installed its new 16-member board. Half of the board members also volunteer at Heartbeat, while the other half are community leaders.
“We are very excited with the direction Heartbeat is taking,” notes Lois Welch of Sylvania Township, serving in her second year as president of Heartbeat. “We think it is important to have members of the community on our board to help us expand our outreach and services to those in need throughout the Toledo area.”
Other board officers are Carol Clark of Holland, vice president; Marlene Morin of Maumee, treasurer; and Rosemary Roesner of Toledo, secretary. Returning for a second term on the board are Debbie Bercher and Joan Olnhausen of Toledo and Jeni Hepner of Holland. Mrs. Morin and Mrs. Roesner are Heartbeat volunteers, while Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Hepner volunteer in Heartbeat’s Heart to Heart Learning Center. Mrs. Bercher is an adjunct instructor at Lourdes College and chairs Heartbeat’s Change for Changing Lives Campaign.
New to the board this year are Deacon Jim Caruso of Holland; Mary Kern, Ernie Lewis, Jan Motter, Barbara Rose, John Shaffer and Mark Tooman of Toledo; Marilyn Maurer of Waterville; and Dyana Yardley-Davis of Maumee.
Deacon Caruso is an attorney in private practice, an instructor at the University of Toledo law school and serves as a deacon at Toledo Rosary Cathedral. Ms. Kern is the director of information services at the University of Toledo Foundation. Mr. Lewis is president of his own consulting firm that specializes in strategic planning, executive coaching and team-building skills. Ms. Motter is the past executive director for the American Heart Association and a former development officer for both the American Red Cross and the United Way of Greater Toledo. Ms. Rose is one of Heartbeat’s founding volunteers. She also has experience in public relations, sales and marketing. Mr. Shaffer is the manager of credit and accounts payable for Libbey Glass. Mr. Tooman has his own public relations and consulting business. Ms. Maurer is a registered nurse at the University of Toledo Medical Center and a parenting instructor in Heartbeat’s Heart to Heart program. Ms. Yardley-Davis has experience in property and portfolio management, marketing, business creation and real estate development.
Founded in 1971, Heartbeat of Toledo provides information, free pregnancy testing, compassionate listening, educational materials and assistance to girls and women dealing with unplanned pregnancies.
