Three honored with diocesan scholarships |

TOLEDO—Three graduating seniors were presented with scholarships provided by the Catholic Diocese of Toledo Employee Benefit Fund.

The annual F. Edward Schaefer Scholarship was awarded in the amount of $2,000 to John Brahier. Two $500 scholarships were awarded to Ellen Gstalder and Scott Recker. Bishop Leonard P. Blair presented their scholarships May 19.
The scholarships are given to a son or daughter of a participant in the diocese’s Retirement Plan for Lay Employees and are awarded with emphasis on service to church and community and leadership. Competition for this scholarship includes the entire 19-county area of the diocese. Mr. Schaefer, in whose memory the scholarship was founded, served on the retirement board for many years.
John Brahier is the son of Anne and Daniel Brahier and attended Toledo St. John’s Jesuit High School. Mrs. Brahier is employed by Perrysburg St. Rose. John plans to attend the University of Notre Dame.
Ellen Gstalder, a graduate of Toledo Central Catholic High School, is the daughter of Karen and Patrick Gstalder. Mrs. Gstalder is employed at Maumee St. Joseph. Ellen plans to attend Bowling Green State University.
Scott Recker is the son of Teresa and Frederick Recker. His mother works at Delphos St. John High School, where he also attended. Scott plans to attend the University of Dayton.
