TOLEDO—The time for a Memorial Day Mass at Calvary Cemetery in Toledo changed after the print edition of the Catholic Chronicle was published.
The Mass at Calvary Cemetery, which is followed by a blessing of the new columbarium, begins at 10 a.m.
Memorial Day Masses at the two other Catholic cemeteries in Toledo — Resurrection and Mount Carmel — also are at 10 a.m.
With the existing columbarium almost full at Calvary Cemetery, located on Dorr Street, the new structure adds 528 niches for cremated remains.
David Czech, sexton of Catholic Cemeteries, says more people are choosing cremation. This is a trend not only among Catholics, he says, but one that has been noticed industry-wide.
Those who wish to be cremated have three options for interment, he added. In addition to being placed in a niche, they can also be buried alone or in the existing grave of a loved one, Mr. Czech added.
The new columbarium was designed to enhance the existing mausoleum, which was recently restored.
Father Michael Billian, diocesan Episcopal vicar and moderator of the curia, is to bless the columbarium following the 10 a.m. Mass May 31 at the cemetery.
Additional improvements are ongoing at Calvary Cemetery, Mr. Czech says, and are to allow for up to 1,300 more gravesites. He anticipates completion of improvements sometime this summer.
At Resurrection Cemetery, located on Hill Avenue in Toledo, a garden mausoleum, named Agnus Dei, is to be blessed by Bishop Leonard P. Blair following the 10 a.m. Mass at the cemetery May 31.
The outdoor mausoleum mirrors the existing Mater Dei garden mausoleum, says Mr. Czech. With this addition, 384 crypt spaces and 240 niches are now available.
Ongoing improvements are being made at the cemeteries, Mr. Czech says, so families can continue to have a choice among the three Catholic Cemeteries in Toledo.
The third cemetery, Mount Carmel, located on East Manhattan, is also hosting a Memorial Day Mass. The day begins with rosary at 9:30 a.m. and Mass is celebrated at 10 a.m. by Society of Christ Father Richard Philiposki, pastor of Toledo St. Adalbert and Toledo St. Hedwig.
