SANDUSKY—The Social Concerns Ministry team from Sandusky SS. Peter & Paul was among the recipients of the 2008 President’s Volunteer Service Award for the outreach work in the parish and community.
The members attended the 16th annual Lavender Award for Excellence Breakfast April 23, at which time they received an official President’s Volunteer Service Award pin, a letter of achievement, a personalized note of congratulations from President George Bush and the award certificate.
Ten of the 13 members: Laurie Fogg, Louise Hall, Rae Anne Helmkamp, Dave and Emmie Hoelscher, Tom Lucas, Mary Lyons, Linda Pedoli, Marie Spicer and Hank Womack earned the Silver Award for logging between 250-499 hours of service. Three members, Chuck and Ann Dever and Barb Leal merited the Gold Award for logging more than 500 hours of service.
The team collects food for the local food pantry and soup kitchen; baby items for Heartbeat Crisis Pregnancy Center; games and craft supplies for Kinship, a family service agency focusing on prevention of child abuse; hats for area migrant laborers; blankets for the homeless shelter and Safe Harbor, women’s abuse shelter; school supplies and backpacks for Head Start students; and hands-on activities such as providing meals and a craft project specific to the season for children at the Boys & Girls Club. They also periodically make and serve meals at the homeless shelter and for area migrant workers.
In addition, during the holiday season the group visits parishioners in nursing homes and provides them with blankets, lap robes, slippers, fellowship and prayer. Last fall, a drive for the military serving overseas yielded 20 huge packing boxes filled with items donated by members of the parish and Sandusky Central Catholic Schools.
