Susan Hellmann, president and CEO of the Mercy Tiffin Health Foundation and director of Organizational Planning, Development and Physician Relations at Mercy Hospital, served as emcee.
Mercy Sister Rose Marie Golembiewski, who provided the invocation, was recognized by Lee Martin, chairman of the Mercy Tiffin Health Foundation Board of Trustees, for completing her final term on the foundation board. Mr. Martin also acknowledged the Foundation Board members in attendance and commended the generosity of the donors who helped make the new hospital a reality.
Dale E. Thornton, president and CEO of Mercy Hospital of Tiffin, assured the attendees that donations given to build the new hospital were a solid investment in local healthcare and in the community. He cited new physician recruitment success, improved patient satisfaction scores and top quartile physician satisfaction scores as positive dividends on donor investments.
Two special awards created by the Mercy Tiffin Health Foundation were also presented.
Dennis Eberly received the Mercy Tiffin Health Foundation Founder’s Award, presented to an individual whose support significantly enabled the Foundation to carry out the Mercy mission of caring for the poor and under-served.
Lee Martin received the Mother Mary Bernardine McMullen Leadership Award, presented to an individual who has demonstrated significant leadership, either in a volunteer, participatory or advisory role that directly supports the Mercy Tiffin Health Foundation in addressing the healthcare needs of the community. The award was established in the spirit of Mother Mary Bernardine who demonstrated admirable leadership skills with the establishment of Mercy Hospital of Tiffin in 1913.
For the third consecutive year, a Lifetime Achievement Award was presented. The Lifetime Achievement Award is an option considered by the committee when its members believe an individual deserving such recognition is evident.
Peg Shock was honored with the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Peg has been a member of our hospital family for over 40 years,” noted Bernie Steinmetz, manager of Development and Public Relations. “The reason she is being honored goes beyond the admirable job she does at Mercy Tiffin. Everyone recognizes Peg for her dedication to many causes. She cheerfully volunteered in serving on the mission services committee and held two terms as Mercy Hospital of Tiffin Auxiliary President. She has provided leadership, enthusiasm and countless hours volunteering during such events as bake sales, garage sales, health fairs, and community events such as the Relay for Life and Alzheimer’s Walk.
“Oftentimes, Lifetime Achievement Awards are awarded to those who have outstanding past accomplishments,” said Mr. Steinmetz. “In this case, our recipient has given enough of herself for a couple of lifetimes … and, fortunately for our community, she continues to shine, oftentimes behind the scenes.”
This was the sixth annual Donor Appreciation dinner hosted by the Mercy Tiffin Health Foundation and the Mercy Hospital of Tiffin Development office. For more information about the Foundation or donor opportunities on the new health promotions campus, contact Mr. Steinmetz at 419-455-7049.
