TIFFIN—Mercy Hospital of Tiffin held its annual recognition banquet Oct. 9 to celebrate members of the Medical Staff and Board of Trustees at Mercy Tiffin for their dedicated service to the hospital and community.
A highlight of the evening was the awarding of the Physician Excellence Awards, a tradition started in 2005. Award winners are selected from nominations gathered from members of the medical staff as well as Mercy Tiffin employees and board members.
The awards were presented to physicians identified as demonstrating “Excellence in Collaboration,” “Excellence in Education” and “Excellence in Mission.” The hospital’s Physician Satisfaction Team, which includes employees from both clinical and support service areas, selected one winner for each category from 11 nominations they received this year.
Andrew Gase, a family medicine physician at Mercy Tiffin, received the Excellence in Collaboration award; William Horvath, a specialist in medical oncology, received the Excellence in Education award; and Dinesh Thekdi, a specialist in cardiology, received the Excellence in Mission award for consistently living the Mercy Mission.
“It is humbling to see the varied and tangible ways our medical staff demonstrates excellence in their words and deeds,” said Susan M. Hellmann, director of Organizational Planning, Development and Physician Relations.
“We all know that physicians significantly touch the lives of their patients. What is not always as apparent is their span and strength of influence upon the lives of their professional colleagues and the hospital employees,” she added. “The Physician Excellence Awards … provide an opportunity to acknowledge that personal impact and express sincere appreciation.”
Prashant Kothari, the medical staff immediate past president, also joined Dale Thornton, president and CEO of the hospital, in recognizing physicians for their service to Mercy Hospital of Tiffin in increments of five years.
“I am pleased to recognize these highly skilled physicians who have dedicated their lives to providing quality medical care to our family and friends in Seneca County,” said Dr. Kothari.
“When you consider the size of our community, we are very fortunate to have the number of physicians we do, with a wide variety of specialties,” Dr. Kothari added. “It is something that makes Tiffin a very unique and inviting place to practice medicine, which is apparent when you see the long tenure of these physicians receiving awards.”
Physician honorees were James Bosse, family medicine, 15 years; Ralph Lyon, emergency medicine, 15 years; Renu Soni, medical oncology, 15 years; Michael Scherer, family medicine, 20 years; and Lalitha Rao, psychiatry, 25 years.
Dr. Kothari, a specialist in anesthesiology, was recognized for serving as medical staff president in 2007.
Three members of the board were honored for their loyalty in serving Mercy. K.C. Rao and Gail Shreiner were honored for three terms while Mercy Sister Mary Jo McGowan was honored for one term.
“Members of our Board of Trustees play a key role in guiding Mercy Hospital of Tiffin into the future, in this case a particularly bright future with our new hospital and health care campus open and serving our community,” Mr. Thornton said. “I commend Dr. Rao, Gail, and Sister Mary Jo for their dedicated service and the important role they have played as members of our board.”
