TIFFIN—Derrick Sowers, fourth-grader at Calvert Catholic Schools, St. Joseph campus, won first place for his Ohio State University-themed painted pumpkin in the Riehm Farm and Corn Maze Pumpkin Painting Contest.
In October, visitors to the farm who made a donation were able to vote for their favorite pumpkins entered by fourth-graders from area schools. Winning pumpkins were auctioned to the highest bidders at the end of the contest.
The event, which was a fundraiser to benefit young patients at the new Mercy Hospital of Tiffin scheduled to open this year, raised $1,240.
Derrick received a plaque for his efforts and his class won the right to display the traveling trophy for the next year. The trophy and plaque were donated by St. Vincent/University of Toledo Medical Center/St. Rita Life Flight.
Other winners, all from the St. Joseph campus school, are third place, Amber Perry; fourth place, Mathew Funkhouser; and fifth place, Allison Huss.
