TOLEDO—Notre Dame Academy (NDA), Junior Academy and the NDA Alumnae Association are bringing anti-bullying activist Jodee Blanco to Toledo for a free parent presentation and teacher/professional workshop.

Titled “It’s Not Just Joking Around,” the programs are offered Nov. 3. The community is invited to both events and reservations are not necessary.

Ms. Blanco is the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir “Please Stop Laughing at Me,” the story of how she was shunned and tormented by her classmates from fifth grade through high school simply for being different. Her story has sparked a movement in the nation’s schools and inspired thousands of pleas for help.

Her second book, “Please Stop Laughing at Us . . . One Survivor’s Extraordinary Quest to Prevent School Bullying,” is a sequel to her memoir and was written in response to the demand for more information from teens, teachers, parents and other adult survivors like herself.

The parent presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the school’s Ave Maria Performing Arts Center. Ms. Blanco plans to discuss all aspects of bullying from identifying if your child is a victim, maintaining an open dialogue, knowing how to intervene successfully, dealing with the parents of bullies and/or victims, working with the school, reviewing the warning signs, resources available and much more.

Ms. Blanco’s presentation is not only for parents experiencing this problem but is also to help any parent know how to protect and guide.

The teacher/professional workshop is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the NDA dining hall. Ms. Blanco is to educate teachers and community professionals on how to instill a new level of empathy and tolerance in their students. The presentation includes a question and answer period and CEU credits are available.

The workshop includes: what you should never say to a bullied student and why; what you should say and do; the two types of educators and how to determine which one you are and why this is important to know when dealing with a bullied child; the difference between authority and emotional credibility and how it impacts a student’s willingness to trust in you; how the bully and victim are flip sides of the same coin and how to assist both; and many other insights into handling this problem that has become a concern of educators.
