TOLEDO—More than 225 parents, alumnae and friends of St. Ursula Academy gathered in the school’s Field House Nov. 6 to witness seven volunteer dancers, paired with professionals and semi-professionals, perform dances thy had learned and practiced.
A panel of three judges raised their paddles with scores as each couple finished, but the deciding factor in determining the winner was the votes cast by the event’s participants. The competition was tough but the clear popular favorite and winner of the mirror ball trophy was Ursuline Sister Donna Frey and her dance partner, John Lavery.
The event chair, Beth Ballay, and a committee transformed the Field House into a dance competition venue with hand-painted panels depicting ballroom dancers, created by Elisa Cooley, and a spotlighted dance floor in the center. The award-winning SUA Dance Company also performed.
Professional dance instruction was provided by Paulette of Paulette’s Studio of Dance and Matt Miller of The Dance Clinic.
Other dancers were Jim Findlay, founder of Impact Products, and P.J. Schaefer; Patrick McGrady, retired CEO of Toledo Area Community Credit Union and St. Francis de Sales High School board member, and Deby Buerk; Dianne LaValley-Tankoos, SUA alumna and Phil Buerk; Roxy Antonio and Kate Pfohl, SUA teachers, and Matt Miller; and Ed Heintschel, St. John’s Jesuit High School basketball coach, and Paulette.
The judges for the evening were Jesuit Father Joaquin Martinez, president of St. John’s Jesuit High School, Father Joseph Cardone, vice president of Mission and Values Integration for St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and associate pastor of Sylvania St. Joseph, and Jane Charette, president and principal of SUA.
