Notre Dame Academy graduates earn $13.5 in scholarships

TOLEDO—Notre Dame Academy is to celebrate its Class of 2009 baccalaureate Mass and commencement exercises May 21 at Toledo Rosary Cathedral. Shifa Kanjwal is valedictorian and Mary Funke is salutatorian.

The Class of 2009 has earned more than $13.5 million in college awards and has been accepted at more than 110 colleges and universities including the University of Notre Dame, University of Michigan, Duke University and Northwestern University. The 152 young women have given more than 9,000 hours of volunteer service.

Valedictorian Shifa Kanjwal has been active in student government, currently serves as Executive Student Council secretary and has been Executive Student Council treasurer and sophomore class treasurer. She is vice president of the Current Events Club, participates in the Arab and Math clubs and represented Notre Dame at Leadership Toledo. Shifa played junior varsity tennis doubles and is on the Speech Team in the public forum category.

Shifa has served on the Red Ribbon Week Committee, Toledo Children’s Hospital Youth Philanthropy Council and teaches math and language at the Islamic Center for Greater Toledo.  She spent a summer working at the University of Toledo Medical Center doing a research study on cardiovascular outcomes in renal atherosclerotic lesions.

Shifa plans to attend Georgetown University and major in pre-med and international studies/global health.

Salutatorian Mary Funke has earned the Notre Dame Academy Women of Service Award, the Sister Mary Gregory Award for hard work and was featured as Student of the Week in The Blade. She participated in the STARS program at the University of Toledo Medical College for students interested in the health care field and earned first place in her field.

Mary received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for her more than 180 hours of volunteer service to Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She has served at the Perrysburg St. Rose Vacation Bible School Camp for three years, and is a Mass server and tutor at the academy.

Mary played basketball for the Notre Dame Academy Eagles for two years and then participated in CYO basketball for two years.  She has been in the Latin Club for four years and currently serves as president. Mary was junior class treasurer and is senior class vice president.  She is in the Aerospace Club and has been a diplomat for four years. She is involved in the Teens Institute Leadership Team (TILT), an organization that promotes substance-free living for young people.

Mary plans to attend High Point University in North Carolina, pursuing pre-med and business majors.
