Notre Dame honors graduates

TOLEDO—Toledo Notre Dame Academy (NDA) named Anne Glaza the Bishop’s Cross honoree and Jessica Yeager the school’s Distinguished Graduate.

The Bishop’s Cross is the highest honor bestowed upon a high school student in the Diocese of Toledo and is given to a student with a high grade point average in religion who also manifests excellence in character, service and leadership.

Anne has been on the pastoral core team for two years and was on executive student council serving as spirituality and service chair. She participated in the NDA Appalachia Christmas Mission Trip that brings Christmas to the small mining community of Harlan, Ky., and the Spring Mission Trip.

She is a National Merit Commended Scholar and received first honors (4.0+ grade point average) every semester of high school.

She has been in the fall musical all four years and in the St. John’s Jesuit High School spring musical for three years. A member of the speech and debate team, she was a 2010 state qualifier and three-time tournament Prose/Poetry champion. As a singer, she participated in choir and was in the Ohio Music Educator’s Association OMEA 2010 Honors Choir and an alternate in 2009.

Other activities include peer tutoring, Hispanic Club, Knitting Club and Princess Club which features service activities to the community and develops self-esteem in young women.

Anne is an active volunteer, working on the political campaign for Stephen Imes for Waterville Council. In her parish school and church, Maumee St. Joseph, she has directed the school musical, helped as a cross country coach and volunteered at various parish functions.

She plans to attend Dominican University in River Forest, Ill., where she earned the Presidential Scholarship ($60,000 total over four years), University Award ($10,200 total over four years) and Assistance Award ($22,000 total over four years). She is the daughter of David and Pauline Glaza of Waterville.

The Distinguished Graduate is another high honor presented to the student who exemplifies the Notre Dame Spirit through academic performance, service to those in the school and community, and who strives to live the Gospel values in daily life.

Jessica graduated with a 4.2 grade point average. She was in yearbook for two years and co-editor her senior year. She participated for four years in fall and spring crew, serving as co-captain her senior year. She was in Health Club, Film Studies Club and Math Club, where she was co-president. She was a homeroom representative on student council and on the Mr. NDA Core Committee. She was in Link Crew, a program that mentors freshman students through tutoring and social activities.

As a junior Jessica was the recipient of the Msgr. Jerome E. Schmit Scholarship presented to students at a Catholic high school who demonstrate leadership qualities, have high academic standards, and believes in the importance of Catholic education.

She logged more than 160 hours of volunteer service, including being a Kairos leader. She serves as a eucharistic minister and a lector at liturgies at NDA and Toledo Blessed Sacrament. Jessica attended the National Youth Conference and was a leader of four “Food Fast Retreats” for junior high students and a vacation Bible school leader at Blessed Sacrament. She is an active volunteer at Cherry Street Mission. In addition, she enjoys playing the piano, reading and writing.

Jessica plans to attend the University of Dayton where she earned the Dean’s Merit Scholarship ($46,000 over four years) and the Gleaner Life Insurance Scholarship. She is the daughter of Matthew and Laurie Yeager of Toledo.
