Visitors to classrooms included Ronald McDonald; Rufus the Dog, the Christ the King mascot, who distributed “doggie bookmarks” in each classroom; Father William Rose, pastor, who served as a mystery reader; Karen Malcom, principal, who read the book “Harry the Dog” to several classes; and therapy dogs, including Sassy, who played the piano. Adults explained how the dogs are trained and the dogs listened to the students reading. Other activities during the week included “Drop Everything and Read” with reading buddies, Stuffed Animal Day, Book and Pillow Day, reading in doghouses made by two parents and a book swap so the students would have new books to read this summer.
