TOLEDO—Notre Dame Junior Academy eighth-grader Franceska Edinger is a National Winner (age 12-14) in the Experimental Horticulture Young American Horticulture Contest for her project on fruit ripening.

She has been asked to join the Ohio Academy of Science and is under consideration to present her project in April 2009 and to be published in a national journal. Her project and presentation were recognized for outstanding use of scientific technique and procedure.
It all started with winning a “Superior” at the Notre Dame Junior Academy Science Fair in spring 2008 for her project involving how apples affect the time it takes a pear to ripen through the production of ethylene and progressed from there.
Her recognition for the project included: “Superior” from the Ohio Academy of Science at the District Science Day at the University of Toledo, First Place in the National Junior Horticultural Association — Ohio Program, Second Place in the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Agricultural and Food Science Research and National Winner in the Experimental Horticulture Young America Horticulture Contest. She also received special acknowledgement from Jennifer Brunner, Ohio Secretary of State, and a Senatorial Citation from Mark Wagoner, Ohio Senate, 2nd Senate District, for her outstanding accomplishments.
