TOLEDO—Thirty students from Toledo St. Ursula Academy (SUA) participated in the Canadian American Security Councils Conference (CASC), a program of the Mid-American Global Education Council.
Nearly 250 students from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Windsor, Ontario, Canada, attended the conference Dec. 6-7 at the SeaGate Center in Toledo.
Participants played the role of a Security Council country, a member of the G-8 or of the Arab League. Representing 15 countries, participants debated, discussed and created resolutions for some of the most pressing issues in today’s world.
Assigned topics included the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, nuclear proliferation in Iran, the global economy, the food crisis, barriers to women entering the work force and the crisis in the Palestinian Authority between Hamas and Fatah.
St. Ursula has been involved in the Model United Nations program for 12 years. All participating St. Ursula students are members of the school’s Model United Nations Club, which has grown from a membership of eight to 40 in the last seven years. Nearly half of the group’s members are taking the school’s World class, taught by teacher and club co-moderator Brian Shaver. SUA teacher Maryanne Hodge also moderates.
As part of the conference, two special councils convened to provide a more diverse educational experience. There was a special session of the G-8 Summit and of the Arab League. These council spots are reserved for delegates who have attended at least one conference, and priority is given to juniors and seniors.
St. Ursula students Kara Mancinotti, Sydni Slack, Michelle Yodzis and Kasey Rahn represented Brazil, France, the UN, and the World Health Organization respectively in the G-8 Summit. In the Arab League, Marissa Gladieux, Sara Adas, Allison Shrewsberry and Rachel Keesey represented Djibouti, Qatar, Morocco and Saudi Arabia, respectively.
St. Ursula students and the countries they represented in the CASC portion of the conference included: Kate George (Burkina-Faso), Carolyn Sharkey (Costa Rica), Camile Fox (Croatia), Nicole Wandtke and Amanda Fisher (Indonesia), Miranda Ames and Elizabeth Hertz (Italy), Alison Lechlak and Lindsay Gedert (Libya), Jocelyn Toney and Dianne Abbas (Panama), Lauren Kowalik (South Africa), Taylor McCollum and Mary Papadimos (Vietnam), Claire Monaghan, Abby Bond and Abby Mello (China), Caitlin Jadwisiak (Russia), Corrine Gleckler and Raven Parker (United Kingdom) and Amelia Wolf and Lauren Mancinotti (USA).
