TOLEDO—Members of the Toledo Serra Club stopped by the Monastery of the Visitation Aug. 23 to provide the nuns with a summer spread that included barbecue chicken and other favorite picnic foods.

Visitation Sisters Joy Katharine Brown, Marie de Sales Kaspar, Marguerite Marie Spellman and Debbie Uhl of the Contemplative Order of the Visitation of Toledo greeted and thanked the Serrans as they accepted the delivery that included fruit and produce, potato and pasta salads, baked beans, fresh bread, pies and ingredients for root beer floats.
The sisters in the Toledo monastery have the privilege of papal enclosure, meaning they spend most of their life within the monastery, leaving only for business, medical needs and other duties. As contemplative nuns, their primary apostolate is prayer.
John Kennedy, a Serran who organized the event, says the picnic for the Visitation nuns coincides with the mini golf outing and ice cream social the club hosts every September for all women religious of the diocese.
“Instead of them going out to the golf outing picnic, we take the picnic to them,” he explains.
“Everyone wants to do something special for these sisters, because they are so special,” adds Mr. Kennedy.
