CAREY—Pilgrims will gather at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation Aug. 6-15 to celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary.
This celebration has been the largest for the shrine for more than 130 years and offers many different opportunities for prayer and spiritual reflection.
The novena preacher is Conventional Franciscan Father Thomas Merrill of Edina, Minn. Ordained in 1979, he has spent much of his life ministering to Hispanic people in this country and Honduras. He is currently pastor of Assumption Church in Richfield, Minn.
The novena weekday schedule includes Mass at 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. The sacrament of reconciliation is available each evening at 7 p.m. Weekday evening novena devotions are held at 8 p.m. with prayer, outdoor rosary procession, homily and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Sunday Masses are at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and noon. Novena devotions are at 2:30 p.m.
The actual celebration of the feast of the Assumption begins on the eve, Aug. 14, with a candlelight vigil procession at 9 p.m. from the basilica to Shrine Park where Bishop Leonard P. Blair will preside at the Mass. Masses on Aug. 14 and 15 will be celebrated in the Upper and Lower Basilica and in the original Shrine Church in English, Italian and Chaldean.
On these two days novena devotions are at 2:30 p.m. and the sacrament of reconciliation is held on the side lawn of the basilica throughout the two days.
