FOSTORIA—Haley Wolf, an eighth-grader at St. Wendelin Junior High School has been named a 2008 Great Lakes Scholar.
Haley joins more than 5,000 students from the Great Lakes region of the Midwest who received such acclaim. More than 2,400 teachers participated in the project to select and honor students who excel academically and show they are well-rounded individuals.
To find a qualified individual, teachers were asked to only consider students with a B average or higher. From there, they were asked to nominate students who are involved in extra-curricular activities, athletics, community or church groups and community service. Students nominated then submitted an application to complete the process.
“We are excited to have Haley represent St. Wendelin in the Scholars Program,” says Angela Joseph, principal of St. Wendelin High School and Junior High. “Haley is a very well rounded and hard working individual. She is dedicated not only to her academics, but also to helping others in need and volunteers her time in the local community. She participates in several different extra-curricular activities and centers her life around her faith. We are very proud of all Haley has accomplished and are excited for her as she enters into her high school years.”
Great Lakes Scholars is part of the 11-year-old Scholars Program that honors students in six Midwest states (Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota) and three others across the country.
Over the summer, Great Lakes Scholars were honored in various fashions. On two different nights, scholars were honored by the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. For the fourth time, the Cleveland Indians honored the scholars at Progressive Field while the Chicago White Sox hosted Great Lakes Scholars for the third time. In each of these events, the students were on the field for a ceremony prior to the start of a major league baseball game.
A book has been published listing all the 2008 Great Lakes Scholars and their accomplishments. In addition, an Internet site, www.greatlakesscholars.com, lists the names of the honorees.
