PERRYSBURG—Mission Doctors Association has named Dr. Richard Paat, a member of Perrysburg St. Rose, the nation’s Catholic Doctor of Year.
Dr. Paat, chief of staff at St. Luke’s Hospital and associate professor of Medicine at the University of Toledo, is being recognized for his commitment to his community in the form of providing free medical care to the uninsured and homeless of the Toledo area, volunteering at a free inner city medical center and running a mobile migrant worker clinic during the summers. In January 2010, he also established a free medical clinic in Perrysburg Heights.
In addition, Dr. Paat has organized numerous domestic and international medical missions to the Philippines, Haiti, Indonesia, Honduras, Guatemala, Tanzania and, following Hurricane Katrina, to Mississippi.
Mission Doctors Association is to present Dr. Paat with the “World of Difference Award” Oct. 24 during the Los Angeles Archdiocese White Mass at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena, Calif.
The award was designed to recognize the efforts of a doctor “whose exemplary actions bear witness to the highest values of their faith and profession.” Mission Doctors Association chose Dr. Paat from a pool of more than 1,000 nominees from around the country.
“He puts others first, extending the healing arm of Christ as a vessel. He walks daily deep in his Catholic faith,” said Dr. Glenn Carlson, chief medical officer at Mercy St. Anne Hospital, who nominated Dr. Paat for the award.
Dr. Paat’s father, Dr. Antonio Paat, with whom he shares a practice, notes with obvious pride that his son’s leadership and self-sacrifice have been an inspiration to others.
Board certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Paat serves on the board of trustees of the SCORE Foundation and is the Medical Director of International Services of HOPE.
He is an alumnus of Toledo St. John’s Jesuit High School and a graduate of Medical College of Ohio. He and his wife, Almira Paat, a registered nurse, have three children.
Dr. Paat said he is honored with this recognition.
Mission Doctors Association was founded in 1959 to support the work of Catholic doctors and their families serving in mission hospitals and clinics. This is the only national Catholic doctor award.
