TOLEDO—The 210 members of Toledo St. John’s Jesuit High School class of 2009 “have amassed more scholarships and grants than any other class and generally have been stellar in so many ways,” says Tim Malone, principal.

Accepted into 100 colleges and universities, they have been offered more than $16 million in awards. College counselor Dr. Margie Warrick explained, “Their collective excellence transcends their many academic, athletic and artistic achievements. The young men exemplify the St. John’s mantra of being men for others.” Valedictorians are James Christy, who heads to Dartmouth; Greg Diment, Georgetown University; Josh Konieczny, Dartmouth; Muneeb Rehman, undecided; and Ron Siebenaler who will go to The Ohio State University. The salutatorian, chosen by the faculty for outstanding achievement, is Shane Hegde, who will attend Stanford University. Six students are National Merit Finalists: Curtis Clemens, Joshua Davies, Ethan Keating, Ian Keigley, Kevin Litzenberg and Alexander Zirbel. Seven are National Merit Commended students: Jeffrey Barnett, Brandon Bopp, James Christy, Joshua Konieczny, Hunter Lent, Michael Stainbrook and Dih Loan Wong. John Wetzel is a National Achievement Scholar.
Two are heading to the Air Force Academy: Zachary Francis and Riley Seidel. Although some special awards to seniors are announced at commencement ceremonies, many others were presented on the last day of school for the class of 2009.
Among the seniors recognized were: John Geach, who received the Fred Beier Memorial Award; Ian Appold, Special Spirit Award; John Weinandy, Harold Mossing Scholarship; Kevin Litzenberg, Campus Ministry Award; Thomas Schoen, St. John Berchmans Award; and Joshua Davis and Kevin Bronner, St. Aloysius Gonzaga Award for service. Achievements involve myriad talents from writing to football. Mario Harris-Rosser is the USA Today Scholar — the one male selected from the entire state of Ohio for his journalism involvement. He heads to Columbia University on a scholarship. He has also been chosen by the Black Journalists of Northwest Ohio to receive a Newsmaker Award. Seniors excelled in Christian service, volunteering hundreds of hours in local agencies and journeying to Guatemala and Appalachia to help the needy. Several athletes have signed letters to play athletics at various colleges and universities including: Tim Kynard, University of Illinois, football; Jack Mewhort, The Ohio State University, football; Hunter Lent, Williams College, football; Taylor McNeill, Wittenberg, football; Chad Stein, Carnegie Mellon, basketball; Riley Seidel, Air Force Academy, lacrosse; Shane Hegde, Stanford, crew; Josh Konieczny, Dartmouth, crew; Jim Shaw, Lake Erie College, baseball; Connor Martin, Robert Morris University, lacrosse; Evan Wiley, Miami of Ohio, football; Ian Gaston, Georgetown, football; and Kevin Yarnell, Michigan State University, track. Seniors on the Titan football team were recognized for having the seventh highest grade point average of any of the other teams in Ohio. “When you consider how rigorous our academics are, this is quite an accomplishment,” said varsity football coach Doug Pearson.
