ASSUMPTION—The 2007-2008 school year was an exciting one as Assumption Holy Trinity students entered a brand new building for the first time.
The building brought many new opportunities for students, including the first time in Holy Trinity history the sports teams had a home gym.
But the one thing that was not new was the incredible spirit of giving that Holy Trinity school students are known for. Each year, the students at Holy Trinity give of their time and treasures to promote service.
Living the Gospel message through service learning is an integral part of the school year. Several groups of students, including the mission reps and student council, organize service projects. In the past, they have raised money and collected items for Katrina victims in New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., missions in Haiti and Papua New Guinea, Heartbeat of Toledo, Bethany House and Make a Wish Foundation, just to name a few.
This past year, the students collected money for Ottawa SS. Peter & Paul Flood Relief Fund. In November, a collection was done for Trees for Troops. The students donated ornaments, garland and tree toppers for the troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. During Advent, each class collected money for Christmas gift cards for needy families. The student council sponsored a Pint Size Heroes Blood Drive for the Red Cross in January.
During Catholic Schools week, the students brought in hundreds of canned goods for St. Vincent de Paul. St. Leo the Great School in New Orleans was the recipient of the annual Mardi Gras auction and fair, and the students raised more than $1,600 for new books for St. Leo’s library.
Operation Rice Bowl was the Lenten project for the school. And the annual Penny Contest in May was an outstanding success, again, this past year. For the Penny Contest, each classroom decorates a large jar based on the Penny Contest theme, which this year was ìAnimals of the Bible.î A total of $975 was raised and donated to the Holy Childhood Association this year.
In all, Holy Trinity School students raised more than $5,000 this year, not to mention the collections of non-monetary items. This amount of money comes from a school with 114 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
