Lourdes celebrates Black History Month with variety of programs

SYLVANIA—In honor of Black History Month, Lourdes College is hosting several celebrations throughout the month of February.

Feb. 18
Theater Vision presentation: “The Color of Justice”
“The Color of Justice” tells the story of 8-year-old Grace Carter and Thurgood Marshall, legal counsel for the NAACP, who together take on the doctrine of “separate but equal” in a battle for equal rights. Set during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s, “The Color of Justice” recounts a time in history when schools, restaurants and even drinking fountains symbolized a segregated nation. Shows are at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. in the Franciscan Theatre. Tickets are $8 per person. Call 419-824-3999 for more information.

Feb. 18
Lourdes College Celebration of Black History
The college’s annual Celebration of Black History features guest speaker John Jones, president of The Greater Toledo Urban League, and musical performances by The Clarence Smith Community Chorus, Lourdes College Chorus, Good Company Ensemble and the Scott High School Gospel Choir. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Franciscan Theatre and is free and open to the public. Call 419-824-3825 for more information.

Mohammed Bilal from MTV’s “The Real World”
Mohammed Bilal, best known as former cast mate on MTV’s “Real World San Francisco” (Season 3), presents “12 Steps Towards Appreciating Diversity.” As a diversity consultant, Mr. Bilal offers a fun, interactive presentation that mixes scholarship, hip-hop and self-reflective narratives in order to equip audience members with easy, valuable and powerful tools for appreciating diversity. The program begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Ebeid Student Center, McAlear Hall and is free and open to the public. For more information call 419-517-8870.

National Underground Railroad Freedom Center trip
Lourdes College closes its Black History Month celebration with a trip to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati sponsored by the College’s Office of Diversity & Multicultural Student Services, the Diversity Awareness and Action Committee and TRiO.
