SYLVANIA—Andre Smith is to serve as coach for the inaugural Lourdes College Gray Wolves men’s basketball team and as director of the college’s Upward Bound Program. “Andre has a wealth of experience as a professional athlete as well as a coach. He also has vast experience working with Upward Bound and other underserved youth programs,” notes Roseanne Gill-Jacobson, vice president for student services. “Andre is an exceptional leader and mentor on and off the court, and it is our pleasure to welcome him to the Lourdes community.”
Mr. Smith is to play an important role in helping shape the college’s new athletic program. He has previously served as assistant men’s basketball coach for Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., as head coach and general manager for the International Basketball League’s Mahoning Valley Wildcats and as assistant men's basketball coach at Youngstown State University. At Youngstown, Mr. Smith helped lead the Penguins to a 20-win season as well as the conference’s championship tournament. As a college student, he was a member of the Youngstown State University men’s basketball team, Lake Land College’s men’s basketball team and played on the Europeans Professional Basketball Teams in Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland and the United States. In addition, Mr. Smith served as director of multicultural affairs at Thiel College. As director, he advised the Organization of the Black Collegiate, Sister-to-Sister and Brother-to-Brother groups and implemented diversity programming and support services in order to ensure student success. He has served as a peer advisor for Lake Land College, volunteer for the Special Olympics and as Upward Bound advisor at Youngstown State University. Upward Bound is a federally funded program serving high school students from low-income families or from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. Upward Bound programs provide students with academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature and a foreign language as well as tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment and work-study opportunities. Lourdes College is currently recruiting students to serve on its men’s basketball team beginning in 2010.
