SYLVANIA—The Ohio Board of Nursing’s (OBN) Nurse Education Grant Program recently awarded the Lourdes College School of Nursing a $193,265 grant to provide resources for its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program.
“The OBN grant will allow the School of Nursing to admit one new MSN cohort every semester,” says Dr. Judy Didion, dean of the School of Nursing. “Funds from this grant will also enable Lourdes to reach out to area health care agencies in order to build new partnerships for our graduate students who are working on their capstone projects and practicum.”
The Nurse Education Grant Program awards funds to nursing education programs that partner with one or more other education programs or health care facilities to increase their nursing student enrollment capacity and post licensure preparation of nurse educators.
The Lourdes College School of Nursing also launched a new Operating Room First Assistant Program this fall. The two-semester program was approved by the Competency and Credentialing Institute and will provide qualifying RNs the education required to sit for the Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) examination. Certified Surgical Technicians are also eligible to enroll in the program.
“Several nurses from Flower Hospital personally approached the college about introducing an Operating Room First Assistant certification program,” notes Dr. Mallie Kozy, associate chair of undergraduate curriculum. “Their request showed a need for this type of educational training.”
The first semester includes classroom lecture and hands-on laboratory instruction on the techniques and procedures used by first assistants in the operating room. The second semester consists of 100 practicum hours in the operating room as well as additional case-management classroom instruction.
For additional information or to register for this program, contact Amy Houston, associate director of admissions, at 419-824-3522 or e-mail ahouston@lourdes.edu.
