SYLVANIA—A new gift shop and gallery on the grounds of the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania offers a wide selection of one-of-a-kind gifts, most of which are produced by local artisans.

A grand opening is scheduled July 7 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. for All Good Things, which opened its doors at the end of June. The shop is located in a space formerly occupied by Pine Cone Gallery, which sold cards, artwork and ceramic tiles.

The new gift shop and gallery expands on that concept, according to Sylvania Franciscan Sister Sharon Havelak, director of All Good Things.

“We had a number of sisters who were selling little things here and there in various places across campus,” she says. “So rather than having items being sold in all different little corners, we decided to pull everything together here.”

They also settled on the new name, which comes from a greeting used by St. Francis of Assisi.

“He very often liked to say ‘Peace and all good’ — ‘Pace e bene’ — and he said that because he realized that everything was a reflection of God, and reflected the goodness of God. And it was his wish of reflecting that goodness back to the people,” explains Sr. Havelak.

“So we chose the name All Good Things, reflecting the goodness that each of the sisters brings to her ministry, and the goodness that we hope to share with everyone who comes into our place.”

The shop is an outlet for work created by the sisters, their associates and partners who reflect the values and mission of their religious community.

Original artwork, greeting cards, soaps and lotions, embroidery, jams and jellies, and Fair Trade items from developing countries are some of the items visitors can expect to find at All Good Things.

Products made locally include ceramic tiles by Sister Margaret Hall, photography by Sister Sheila Shea, pillows and other sewn works by Sister Dominica Niedbala, embroidery by Sister Gretchen Faerber and Sr. Jeanine Sokolowski, soaps and lotions by Sister Karen Zielinski, Sister Nancy Ann Johnson and Sr. Ursula Jay, jewelry by Sister Mary Peter Kaminski and Sister Josephine Dybza, and nativity sets and other clay sculptures by Sylvania Franciscan associate Linda Fadden.

The shop also features works by Franciscan Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak, the artist behind the murals that adorn many buildings on the sisters’ campus and the adjacent campus of Lourdes College.

“Prayer pillows” are another unique item Sr. Havelak points out. She explains each heart-shaped pillow has a pocket containing a small card saying the pillow comes with a pocket filled with prayers.

“We feel that that’s a wonderful outreach where we can share our prayers with people,” says Sr. Havelak.

In the future, she says the plan is to sell books on such topics as spirituality, the earth and peacemaking.

“We hope this becomes more than just a place to buy something — that it becomes a meeting place of ideas,” she explains.

The grand opening event for All Good Things is to include a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce.

The shop’s regular hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

All Good Things is located in Madonna Hall on the Sisters of St. Francis campus in Sylvania, 6832 Convent Blvd. To visit, enter the drive on Convent Boulevard closest to Main Street and follow the directional signs.
